Jean Bowen departed this life early Tuesday morning April 26, 2022 peacefully at her home. She was born September 12, 1932, in Bloomington Springs, TN to the late H.P.(Porter) and Bertha Bowen. In addition, to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years to Lonnie Joe Farley, who died on November 20, 2007. He was the love of her life. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Buster Bowen of Baxter; sisters, Doris Hambric of Birmingham, AL, and Ruby Young of Lebanon; an infant sister; son-in-law, Mike Johnson; niece and nephew, Marshella and Chris Porter. Jean was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. Above all things, she was a Christian woman that shared Christian values with her family and raised them with this in mind. Her family was her world. She was an excellent cook and loved cooking for her family. She began cooking at an early age to help her mother, who worked in the family business. She was called Ma Jean by her grandchildren. She was an expert biscuit maker and made biscuits that would melt in your mouth. She took a Wilton cake decorating class to learn to decorate the many birthday cakes that she made for her grandchildren. She loved to cook, sew, walked every day at TTU and she loved keeping a spotless home. Mom and Dad made many gardens and canned for the family. She loved to shop and had a keen eye for fashion. She always loved a day out of shopping in Nashville with her girls. She shopped well into her 80’s and loved every minute of it until a few years ago, when her health declined. When her daughter Susan opened Schoolhouse Supply in Cookeville, she was very hands on in the store and was always willing to help the local teachers with products for their classrooms. She made many friends during that time. Mom also loved spending many summers and Christmas holidays in Gatlinburg with family or at the beach. Many special memories were made with family during this time. Jean is survived by her children, Cynthia (Stan) Burton and Susan Johnson all of Cookeville; grandchildren, Eric (Kristie) Burton of Cookeville, Brent (Callie) Johnson of Augusta, GA, Beth (Patrick) VanDeven of Nashville, Ben (Bridget) Johnson of Cookeville; great grandchildren, Joseph, Oliver, Emmitt, Cain and Cooper Burton all of Cookeville, Tucker VanDeven of Nashville, Maegen Hamm and Madison Brown of Cookeville; great-great grandchildren, Kinsley and Emmerson Hamm of Cookeville; nieces, Jeanne Garrison of Austin, TX, Darlene Hambric of Moody, AL, Veronica Hambric of Gardendale, AL, Mary Bowen of Baxter; great nephews, Christopher (Emma) Porter, Chad (Meredith) Porter; great-great niece Poppy Porter, great-great nephews, Bowen Porter and Marshall Porter. Family will serve as pallbearers. Jean's family would like to thank her caregivers for the last two years, Sinda Hull, Carolina Bain, Ann Holland, Diana Nievens, Cena Keisling, Gail Carr, and Pat Hoffman.
