COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Janet Kay Green, a devoted educator and cherished member of the Cookeville community, passed away peacefully at her residence in Cookeville, Tennessee, on November 3, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on February 11, 1943, in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, Janet dedicated her life to teaching and nurturing the minds of countless students throughout her esteemed career.
Janet’s professional journey in education began after she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memphis State University in 1965 after attending the University of Michigan. Her teaching career spanned several years and institutions, including the Memphis City Schools from 1965 to 1967, Hamilton County Schools in 1968-1969, Greene Valley Developmental Center from 1974 to 1978, and concluding with her impactful tenure at Putnam County Schools from 1978 until her retirement in 2005. Janet was particularly passionate about working with exceptional children and was proud to be part of the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS), cherishing all her students, especially her TEIS babies. Her dedication to her profession was recognized when she received the Council for Exceptional Children Teacher of the Year award for both the Memphis City Schools in 1966 and the Putnam County School System later in her career.
A congregant of Cookeville First United Methodist Church, Janet was actively involved in the Mary Martha Circle of UMC Women, the Stephens Ministry, and various other church committees. Her commitment to her faith and community was evident in her works and the relationships she fostered throughout her lifetime.
Janet leaves behind her loving family, including her two sons, Mark Spencer (Tammy) Green and James Robert (Maria) Green, both of Cookeville, as well as her daughter, Kelly Hodge, also of Cookeville. She adored her role as a grandmother to Spencer, John Luke, Emily, and Patrick Green, along with Addelyn Hodge, each of whom brought joy and fulfillment to her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell Harold and Edna Ellen Hughes Hall.
The memorial services honoring Janet's life will be held at the Cookeville First United Methodist Church, located at 165 East Broad Street, Cookeville, TN. Visitation will take place on November 9, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Chip Hunter officiating.
