COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - James Dale (Jim) Wheeler, a respected member of Cookeville, passed away on January 8, 2025, at Life Care Center in Sparta. Born on November 2, 1958, he was a proud native of Jackson County, TN.
Jim began his career with the United States Postal Service as a clerk at the Bloomington Springs Post Office. His dedication and commitment to his work led him to become Postmaster at Chestnut Mound in 1980. Over the years, he held the role of Postmaster at several branches, including Monroe, Livingston, Sparta, and Cookeville, culminating in his retirement from the Cookeville office in 2012 after 34 years of service. Throughout his career, Jim was known for his quiet demeanor, choosing his words carefully, and demonstrating intelligence and a quick wit that brought warmth to those around him.
A man of faith, Jim was a member of the Church of Christ. He held membership in the Cookeville Masonic Lodge #266 F & AM, where he attained the 32 Degree Scottish Rites Mason.
Jim’s personality was one of close connection to family, and he is fondly remembered by those who hold him dear. He is survived by his mother, Bobbie Ragland Wheeler; brother, Shane Wheeler, and sister-in-law, Jill Wheeler; son, Huston Wheeler; former wife, Laura Wheeler; and a special cousin, Marcia Borys. He was preceded in death by his father, James Huston Wheeler, and his grandparents, Virgil and Vola Wheeler, and Carmel and Clara Ragland.
A graveside service to honor Jim will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday January 15 at Crest Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Happy Haven Children's Home or the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Jim’s legacy of dedication to family, service, and community will surely live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
