James Milton Maberry, age 94 of Cookeville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday September 6, 2021. He was born November 9, 1926 in Gainesboro, TN to the late Birdle Dallas and Martha Elizabeth (Lizzy) Swearengin Maberry. James graduated from Jackson County High School and attended Tennessee Tech before being called to the US Army. He raised his family in Cookeville with his late wife Ruth Emogene, whom he married on October 9, 1948. James was a WWII veteran having served in the South Pacific as a Sergeant in the US Army. After serving, he was employed as a truck driver and eventually retired at Tennessee Carolina Transportation. This position took him all over the US including the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina which were his favorite. Traveling suited him well since he loved being outdoors enjoying God's creation. His greatest love, however, was his family. He adored his wife and children as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called him Papa. In later years, he enjoyed planning church trips with the "Keenagers" at Bangham Heights Baptist Church where he was a member. James leaves behind his loving daughter, Vickie (Hamilton) Frost; daughter-in-law, Vicki Maberry, all of Hendersonville; siblings, Charles (Ruth) Maberry, Ruth Woolbright, Hoyt (Shirley) Maberry, and Joe (Debbie) Maberry; sister-in-law, Joyce Grimsley-Barton; grandchildren, Dianne (Eric) Rosenberry, Chris Maberry, Miranda Mayfield, Jeremy (Meredith) Maberry, Cliff Maberry; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruth Emogene Grimsley Maberry; son, Gary Maberry; and his infant sister, Wanda Lou Maberry. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday September 10 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Keith Tosh and Eric Rosenberry will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Smith Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bangham Heights Baptist Church Library Fund, 5961 Hilham Rd, Cookeville, TN 38501. Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
