COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - James Howard Flatt, affectionately known as "Jim," was born on August 31, 1937, in Jackson County, Tennessee. He departed this life on November 9, 2024, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that touched the lives of many.
Jim had a remarkable career, beginning with his work at Teledyne Stillman and later at APCOM in Cookeville. His career journey continued as he joined Capital City Bolt and Screw in Nashville. He was immensely proud to have continued his work up to the age of 84, retiring with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
A man of strong character, Jim was known for his loving and generous nature. He dedicated himself to taking care of his family, and he commanded admiration and respect from all who had the privilege of knowing him. He served in the Tennessee National Guard, further showcasing his commitment to service and community.
Jim was an active member of the Holladay Church of Christ, where he found joy and companionship among fellow congregants. His life was woven together with the bonds of family and friendship, where he will be remembered fondly by all.
He is survived by his beloved brothers, Billy Flatt (Mary) and Ronnie Flatt (Rena) two sister in laws, Theresa Flatt and Bette Flatt. Jim is also survived by his step-daughter, Sheila Hines (James); step-granddaughter, Makala Hooten; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Sheila Rose (Donald), Shirley Druggan (Bob), Jammie Hunter (Adam), Chris Flatt (Angela), Sharon Flatt Carlile, Eric Flatt(Sierra), Kelly Bowman (Chip), Kenny Flatt(Amy), Bernadette Hoffman (Ken), Patrick Flatt and John Flatt. He leaves behind a special friend, Mark Hays (Victoria), who shared in the joys of his life. And his two best friends Sue "Susie" Fox and Shirley Holmes.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Sewell Isaac Flatt and Ruby Lee Roberts Flatt; his son, Chad Flatt; his sister, Linda Wilmoth; and his brothers, Kenneth and Windell Flatt. He was also preceded in death by his step-daughter, Sherry Hooten.
A funeral service honoring Jim will be at 2 pm Sunday November 17 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Johnny Fox will officiate. Visitation for friends and family will be on Saturday from 4-8 pm and again Sunday from 1-2 pm. Jim will be laid to rest at Curry Chapel Cemetery in Jackson County.
James Howard Flatt's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
