James E. Duncan

February 1, 1944 — August 14, 2023

James Edward Duncan Sr., was born on February 1, 1944, in White County, Tennessee, and passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday August 14, 2023. James was a man of unwavering faith, hard work, and dedication to his family and community.


James was the son of the late Amon and Oshie Mae Nash Duncan. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Norma Jene Steward Duncan; his brothers, Bud and Jerry Duncan; his sister, Lizzie Duncan Lafever; and his son, Ronald Gene Duncan.


Surviving James are his sister, Mary Ilene Nash of White County, TN; five sons, James E. (Eddie) Duncan Jr. and Barbara of Bloomington Springs, TN, William (Gregory) Duncan and Judy Lewis of White County, TN, Timothy (Brian) Duncan and Bobbie of Las Vegas, NV, Don Hoskins and Sue of Suffolk, VA, and Randy Scott of White County, TN. James also leaves behind a special friend, Judy Hoskins; ten grandchildren, Jackie and Jed Duncan of Johnson City, TN, Gabe Duncan of Chattanooga, TN, Chase Duncan of Baxter, TN, Michael Duncan of Las Vegas, NV, Kaley Duncan-Rodriguez and Casey of White County, TN, Natasha (Hoskins) and Terrell Garvin of Suffolk, VA, Don Jr., (DJ) and Megan Hoskins of Richmond, VA, and Lacy and Haly Scott of Cookeville; and nine great-grandchildren. James is also survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a large church family.


James was a lifelong farmer, a profession that reflected his love for the land and his commitment to providing for his family. He was a man who understood the value of hard work and the importance of community. He was an active member of the United Freewill Baptist Church in Cookeville, where he was loved and respected by all.


He was known for his stern demeanor, but those who knew him well understood that beneath his tough exterior was a heart full of love and kindness. He was an outstanding member of his community, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.


Beyond his work and community involvement, James had a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, hobbies that allowed him to appreciate the beauty of nature and the simple pleasures of life.


Funeral services for James will be at 11 a.m. Friday August 18 at the Dyer Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Dow Allen and his son, Eddie Duncan will officiate. Interment will follow at Nash Cemetery in Putnam County. His family will welcome friends Thursday from 4 - 8 p.m. and again Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.
