Baxter, TN

BAXTER CHAPEL - James Ray Dobbs, a cherished resident of Baxter, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in Putnam County on October 3, 2024, at the age of 68. Born on February 9, 1956, in Putnam County, he dedicated his life to the timber industry as a logger, contributing significantly to the community he loved.

Ray attended school at Nash Grove School, where he formed foundational memories that would follow him throughout his life. His work in the timber industry was not merely a job for him, but a true calling that reflected his deep-rooted connection to the lands and forests of his upbringing.

A man of simple pleasures, James found joy in fishing and taking leisurely days to unwind, or as he referred to it as, "loafing". He had a memorable personality that radiated warmth, making friends easily and cherishing moments spent with loved ones. Among his closest relationships was his best friend, Ernie Hargis, who stood by him through life's many chapters.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Joy Chaffin Dobbs, who provided a source of strength and companionship throughout their journey together. He is also survived by his son, James (Linda) Dobbs, and his daughters, Jenny (Tony) Nash and Mary (Joe) Whitehead, all residents of Baxter. Additionally, he is lovingly remembered by his bonus daughter, Ashlee "Sheeba" Dobbs. The legacy of James will continue through his grandchildren: Dakota Dobbs, Jeffery Carter, Cherokee Dobbs, Kaitlyn Dobbs, Abby Hayes, Jacob Hayes, and Nicholas Lafever. He was also blessed with the company of six great-grandchildren: Anna Dobbs, Piper Dobbs, Kolter Carter, Mason Dobbs, Raelynn Dobbs, and Andrew Dobbs, who brought him immense joy.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Carlen Jack and Mary Gambrell Dobbs, as well as his brother, Robert Dobbs, and sister, Ova Dee Dobbs. Their presence in his life shaped the man he became and left a lasting impact on his character.

Ray will be remembered fondly for his unwavering love for his family, his commitment to his craft, and the light he brought into the lives of those who knew him. His spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of sharing moments with him.
