DYER CHAPEL-James "Ray" Bumbalough, born on March 27, 1941, in Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Ray is remembered as a diligent worker and devoted family man who made significant contributions throughout his life.
Ray began his career at Southern Furniture Manufacturing Company in Cookeville and dedicated many years to the trucking industry, ultimately retiring from General Motors as a truck driver. He also honorably served in the Army National Guard, a testament to his commitment to both work and country.
A man of many passions, Ray enjoyed fishing and gardening, activities that brought him joy and tranquility. His love for nature and the outdoors was evident in the time he spent nurturing his garden and casting a line on peaceful waters.
Ray’s legacy continues through his loving family. He is survived by two sons, Darrell Bumbalough of Antioch, TN, and Jim (Teresa) Bumbalough of Clarksville, TN; a daughter, Sherry Valko of Bull Head, AZ; a brother, Roy Bumbalough of Algood; a sister, Ruth Gentry of Brentwood, TN; and a sister-in-law, Cindy Bumbalough of Texas. He cherished his role as a grandfather to grandchildren: Nicholas Valko, Nathan Valko, Clinton Tyler Bumbalough, Tori Bumbalough, Tanner Bumbalough, Shelbi Lund and Mandi (Kyle) Adams, as well as great-grandchildren. Ray also shared his life with his partner, Pattie Crawford of Mt. Juliet, TN.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Gilbert and Willene Shipley Bumbalough; his son-in-law, Mike Valko; brothers, Jerry Bumbalough and Philip Bumbalough; and brother-in-law, Herb Gentry.
Ray's memory will be honored during a visitation on Sunday, December 8, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Monday, December 9, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Dyer Chapel, located at 798 South Willow Avenue, Cookeville, TN 38501. A funeral service will follow on December 9, 2024, starting at 1:00 PM. Interment with military honors will follow at West Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The life of James "Ray" Bumbalough serves as a reminder of the love and strength of family, the importance of hard work, and the joy found in the simple pleasures of life. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
