James Monroe Ashley, Jr.

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - James Monroe Ashley Jr., affectionately known as Jim, passed away on November 11, 2024, at his residence in Cookeville, Tennessee. He was born on April 26, 1943, in Obion County, Tennessee, and lived a life marked by dedication, community, and a deep passion for engineering and classic cars.

Jim had a fruitful career as a Product and Design Engineer, first at Tutco and later at Emerson Electric, where he eventually retired. His contributions to the field were significant, reflecting his commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering.

A proud veteran, Jim served in the United States Navy, an experience that undoubtedly shaped his character and values. He was known for his friendly demeanor, never having met a stranger, making him a cherished member of his community and beyond.

Education was important to Jim, and he graduated from Union City High School in 1961. He furthered his studies at Freed-Hardeman University and Tennessee Tech University, where he continued to embrace knowledge and personal growth.

Jim had a profound love for classic automobiles, particularly vintage Ford Mustangs. He operated Ashley's Classic Mustang, a venture that allowed him to assist fellow enthusiasts in acquiring parts for their prized cars. His dedication to the Mustang community earned him the affectionate nickname "Mustang Man." He was also passionate about classic Thunderbird cars, proudly being a member of the Smokey Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club and the Classic Thunderbird Club International. Additionally, Jim was a founding member of the Pistons Car Club in Cookeville, which emphasized his lifelong devotion to automotive culture.

In his spiritual life, Jim was a member of Sycamore Church of Christ, a community that played a significant role in his life and values.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Faye Rittenbery Ashley; two sons, James A. "Tony" Ashley (wife, Susan) and Greg Ashley (wife, Martha); two grandchildren, Jacob Kyle Skelton (wife, Stella) and Joshua D. Skelton; and a great-granddaughter, Raelynn Mae Skelton.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Monroe Ashley Sr., known as "Buddy," and Annie Mae Albritton Ashley, as well as his sister, Linda Shaw.

A funeral service to honor Jim will be at 1pm Thursday November 14 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Johnny Fox will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation for friends and family will be Thursday from 10:30am -1pm.

Memorial contribution in Jim's memory can be made to Sycamore Church of Christ Building Fund, 1144 Crescent Drive Cookeville, TN 38501.
