Quinton Cloves (Jack) McGee, 87, died Thursday May 21, 2015 at his childhood home in the Smith Chapel Community in Putnam County, surrounded by his family. Jack will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and faithful friend to all who knew him. He lived each day of his life with kindness and putting others first. Jack will be remembered for the dignity and determination he had while fighting Parkinsons. Jack was born June 10, 1927, in Jackson County to the late Cloves and Lola Phillips McGee. He was educated in the Jackson County School System graduating in 1946. After graduation he went to work at Wilson Sporting Goods. In 1948 he was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in the 4th Infantry Division of Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Before leaving for duty he married the love of his life Devonia Brotherton McGee. Later he was deployed to Germany where he was a combat engineer with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After serving in the army, Jack came back to Cookeville where he again joined Wilson Sporting Goods and worked for a total of 44 years. After retiring he began his dream job, farming and raising cattle on the farm hat had belonged to his grandfather and father. Jack served as an alderman in the city of Algood in the early 60's. He was also a member of the Algood Jaycees in the late 50's and early 60's serving as president, treasurer and on various committees. He was a member of the Algood Junior Chamber of Commerce where he chaired the annual 4th of July Celebration. Jack was raised in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was ordained as an elder at the Spring Creek Presbyterian Church in Putnam County. He and his wife later joined the Cookeville Cumberland Presbyterian Church where attended for more than 60 years. At that church he served as an elder, Sunday School Superintendent and on various committees. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Devonia Brotherton McGee; two daughters, Dr. Kim Wright and husband Allen of Cookeville, Janet McGee of Louisville, TN, a granddaughter, Chelsea Kate Mercer and husband Bradley of Greeneville, TN and a great-granddaughter, Katherine Susannah Mercer. He is also survived by a sister, Inez McGee of Cookeville, and a host of nieces and nephews and many close friends. In addition to his parents, two sisters, Mildred Horner and Elese Allen, and an infant brother, Donald McGee, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Sunday May 24 at 2 p.m. at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles McCaskey and Rev. Christian Smth officiating. Interment will follow in Smith Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Upper Room Sunday School Class and elders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Active Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family wishes to thank Jack's special caregivers Lisa Dudley and Skeeter Flowers for the love and care they showed him during his illness. Memorial contributions in Mr. McGee's honor may be made to the Cookeville Cumberland Presbyterian Church Building Fund 565 E 10th Street Cookeville, TN 38501.
