Hugh Hix Stubblefield, age 90, died quietly and swiftly Wednesday November 9, 2022 at Bailey Manor Memory Care in Cookeville.
He was attended by loving and caring staff and by his wife of 63 years, who arrived about four minutes after he snuck out. Mr. Stubblefield was born October 14, 1932 in Grundy County near Viola, TN to the late Hugh Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Stubblefield.
He was married to Ann Elizabeth Blair. They had two children, Katie Elizabeth of Long Beach, CA and Jon David of Valerico, FL; one granddaughter, Whitney Nichole Murner; and several great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. Carl Thomas and Dr. Leslie J Stubblefield; and sister, Mary Christine Searcy of Wakefield, VA
Mr. Stubblefield taught high school in Atlanta and Cincinnati before he and his wife came to Tennessee Tech in 1962 where he taught journalism. He advised the University yearbook for many years and the student newspaper until he retired in 1999. He received various honors from the National Council of College Publication Advisors. He was quite proud of the success of his students and kept in touch with many of them after they graduated. He was a member of Upper Cumberland chapter of Tennessee Trails Association and was an active member for many years. He held various positions in Park View/Friendship United Methodist Church in Cookeville. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Stubblefield held degrees from Tennessee Tech, George Peabody College and the University of Missouri.
A memorial service is set for Dec. 17 at Friendship United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. with the service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hix and Ann Stubblefield Journalism Scholarship Fund at Tennessee Tech, P.O. Box 1915 Cookeville, TN 38505 or to the Friendship United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2113, Cookeville, TN 38502.
