Graveside services and interment with military honors for Mr. Homer S. Hackett, age 91, of Cookeville, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 22, at Crest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Mark Gaw officiating. The family will receive friends from 4- 8 p.m.Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Mr. Hackett passed away Monday, September 19, 2016 at his residence. He was born December 19, 1924 in Trousdale County to the late Benton B. and Annie Mai Armstrong Hackett. Shortly afterward, his family moved to the Monoville Community, Smith County. After graduation from Smith County High School in 1942, he entered the Navy. He was assigned to the Navy Air Corps and served in the Pacific Theater on the Marianas Islands. He was a nose gunner in a PB4 Y2 bomber. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Hackett joined Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Cooperative in Carthage in 1948 and transferred to the Cookeville office in 1951. He retired from UCEMC as district manager in1990. After his family, his joy in life was sports. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for more than twenty-five years. His 1966 Little League All-Star team won the State Championship and recently honored him, on the fiftieth anniversary of the win, with a reunion attended by all the team. In 1979, he again won the state championship with a Junior Babe Ruth All-Star team. During a Homer Hackett Appreciation Day in 1989, the Parkview Babe Ruth Field was named for him. Mr. Hackett and his wife, Carrie Nell Russell Hackett, whom he married December 23, 1948, have been members of Washington Avenue Baptist Church since the church was established. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and John Parrish of Cookeville, son and daughter-in-law, Michael S. and Cynthia Hackett of Brentwood, six grandchildren David Legge (fiancee April Sisk), Laura Beth Libbey, Katie Horn (husband, Eric), Hunter Hackett, Leslie Bledsoe (husband Sam), and Carrie Hackett, eight great-grandchildren, Jacob and Evan Libbey, Derek and Julia Legge, Sarah, Emily, and Anna Horn, and Rudy Bledsoe, He is also survived by sisters, Lucille Dixon and Ann Gregory Hackett both of Carthage, and Billie Jo Wamack of Birmingham, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Julia Roberts, Betty Carson, and Beverly Hackett and a brother, Bobby Hackett, all of Carthage. Darryl Huddleston, David Nixon, Hunter Hackett, David Legge, Sam Bledsoe, and Jacob Libbey will serve as pallbearers. Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
