Funeral services for Herbert (Herb) Mitchel Mills, age 84 of Cookeville, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday February 9 at Stevens Street Baptist Church. Pastors Scott Parkison, Jimmy Arms, and Tim Frank officiated the service. Interment with military honors followed in Crest Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends Monday evening from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Dyer Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home and again Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Social distancing and the use of masks were encouraged. Herb passed away suddenly Saturday, February 6, 2021 at his home. He was born May 18, 1936 in Sparta, TN to the late William Ernest Mills and Lilly Modena Howell Mills. Herb was a US Army veteran. He was a longtime faithful member of Stevens Street Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and as Sunday School teacher to the People of Promise class for over 50 years. His career in furniture manufacturing spanned several decades. He strived to design and build the best quality products possible, but he found his greatest rewards in the people he mentored, encouraged, and supported throughout the years. Herb loved to sing, especially the old hymns, and spent many Monday afternoons (pre-Covid) with members of Pistole Baptist Church at Lifecare in Sparta. He also dearly loved his family, and he enjoyed being involved in the lives and activities of his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews." He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer (Doug) Eberhart of Bowling Green, KY, Julie (Chris) Galloway of Cookeville; sister, Jonelda (James) Pitman of Sparta; sister-in-laws, Barbara Maxwell and Rubye Mills of Cookeville, Deane Mills and Wilma Mills of Sparta; grandchildren, Rachel Eberhart, Matthew Eberhart, and Clayton Galloway; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sabra Bohannon Mills; sisters, Anna Ruth Holland, Etta Dunn, Venera Mills, and Mildred Ward; brothers, Curtis, Carson, Jimmy, Harold, and Clifford Mills. Pallbearers were family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Care Center at SSBC, 327 W. Stevens St. Cookeville, TN 38501.
