A memorial service for Mrs. Helen Shriner, 86, of Cookeville and formerly of Fairhope, AL, will be held Monday, May 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Daulphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, AL. Rev. Kathy Jorgensen will officiate. Mrs. Shriner's family will receive friends Monday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. She passed away Saturday morning, January 30, 2016 in Life Care Center of Sparta. Helen was born June 11, 1929 in St. Augustine, FL to the late James Hickman and Bernice Smircich. A Registered Nurse, Helen graduated from the former Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans in 1950. She worked with her husband in his private pediatric practice in Mobile, AL for several years. They were longtime members of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. She moved to Cookeville following her husband's passing in May of 2013. She will be fondly remembered as a sweet and loving person. She enjoyed tennis and sewing and had a sincere love for animals, dogs in particular. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John Franklin Shriner, M.D.; daughter, Debra Stapleton; son, Steven Shriner; brother, James Hickman; and by sisters, Dorothy Peele and Mary Lou Hartley. She is survived by her son, John Shriner, Jr. and wife Joann of Cookeville; daughter, Julie Howard of Lillian, AL; grandchildren, Peter (Maggie Bogle) Shriner, Ian (Kimberly) Shriner, Sydney Howard, Mason Howard, Ansley Howard, Shelby Howard and Stephanie Taylor; and by great grandchildren, Wiley Shriner, Logan Howard and Mavis Shriner.
