BAXTER CHAPEL-George M. Shanks, was born November 5, 1928 in Buffalo Valley, TN and died Friday, January 24, 2025 at his home in Baxter.

George was a graduate of Baxter Seminary. In his younger years, he lived in a Pre-Civil War house and he enjoyed telling stories of old times and his youthful adventures.

George was a farmer most of his life taking care of his cattle

He was an avid photographer taking pictures of family and nature scenes.

George enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Some of his favorite pastimes included watching TV, especially the game show network, sports and nature shows.

He enjoyed listening to gospel music on public television.

George retired as a park attendant with Edgar Evins State Park in DeKalb County, TN. After his retirement, he was a volunteer at Baxter Library while his wife was librarian there.

He was preceded in death by his wife Brinda Fay Stewart Shanks on June 2, 2018, parents, Luther "Luke" Alexander and Dona Florence Boyd Shanks, sisters and a brother-in-law Miriam Shanks Gwaltney and husband Bill, Carolyn Shanks Huddleston, nephew Bruce Huddleston, father and mother-in-law Shirley and Hertha Reagan Stewart, brother-in-law Douglas Stewart.

Survivors include step-son James Douglas Haney of Baxter, brother-in-law Ted Huddleston of Silver Point, TN, sister-in-law Nelda Stewart of Cookeville, niece and nephews: Margaret Moore, Mike (Lisa) Huddleston, Donnie (Peggy) Huddleston, David (Kay) Huddleston, Gary Huddleston, William (Myrna) Gwaltney.

A funeral service for George will be Tuesday, January 28 at 1 PM at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home, 532 4th Avenue South, Baxter, TN. Visitation with the family will Monday, January 27 from 5 to 8 PM and after 11 AM Tuesday until service time at the funeral home. Shirley Puckett will officiate.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
