Funeral services for Mr. George Harvey Johnson, age 88 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday October 9th at 1 p.m. at Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Rev. Whitney Mitchell will officiate. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. His family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral and Thursday from 12 noon until service time at the church. Mr. Johnson died Monday evening October 6, 2014 at Bethesda Health Care Center. He was born December 21, 1925 in Cookeville to the late Harvey Brett and Ura Opal Scott Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Cookeville and member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church. He served in World War II in Europe as a Technician 5th Grade with the 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division. He was a 1949 graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic Institute with a Business Management degree. He ran Johnson Implement Company and later worked at Rose's Department Store. He was active in his community, serving in the Tennessee National Guard as a younger man on the City of Cookeville Planning Commission. Later in life he enjoyed genealogical research and participated in the Upper Cumberland Genealogical Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Rich and Mary Ruth Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alma Jean Fox Johnson (whom he married September 23, 1956 in Nashville); three sons, Ken (Elizabeth) Johnson of Atlanta, Paul Johnson of Nashville, and Michael Johnson of Anchorage, AK; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Robert, Samuel and Savannah Johnson; and by two sisters, Claudine Branch and Amelia (Wendell) Kendrick, both of Cookeville. Mr. Johnson's nephews will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cookeville First United Methodist Church, 165 E. Broad St., Cookeville, TN 38501.
