Freelan Smith

Funeral services for Mr. Freelan "Smitty" Douglas Smith, age 71 of Cookeville, will be held Wednesday, August 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Smith Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Bill Haney will officiate. Mr. Smith's family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Friday, July 28, 2017 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County in Algood. He was born January 30, 1946 in Jackson Co., TN to the late Luther and Alice Smith. A self-taught and self-made man, Smitty was owner of P&R Collision for over 30 years. He enjoyed building, engineering and designing the projects he was always tinkering with. He was an airplane pilot, even building his own plane. He also enjoyed working on British and Hot Rod Automobiles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Smith and Jimmy Smith He is survived by daughter, Sheryl Lynn DeRose and husband John of Wilmington, Delaware; son, Brian Smith of Cookeville; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, partner, Olivia Williams; stepson, Harley Key, both of Cookeville; brothers, Dennie Smith, Lannie Smith and Dale Smith; and by sisters, Wanda Waitman, Marilyn Quillen and Phyllis Anderson.
