Fred Shanks

BAXTER Funeral services for Fred W. Shanks, Jr., age 70, of Silver Point, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 23 at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Bro. John Davis, Bro. Josh Sherman, and Bro. Carl Scarlett officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. and again Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. Mr. Shanks passed away Tuesday morning. June 20, 2017 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born October 14, 1946 in Oak Ridge, TN to the late Fred W. Shanks Sr. and Vennie Carr Shanks Gentry. Fred had a servant's heart, always willing to help others. He served his country in the US Army and was veteran of the Vietnam War. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering Science from TTU. He worked as a Project Engineer at Flowserve in Cookeville for over 33 years of service until his retirement. Fred was a Christian and faithful member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Baxter. He served the church as deacon for over 30 years. He served as a board member of Smellage Cemetery and a member of the Mended Hearts organization in Cookeville. Most importantly, Fred served his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Sue Cole Shanks, who he married June 22, 1968 in Baxter; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Liz Shanks of Baxter; daughter and son-in-law, Macy and Barry Bohannon of Baxter; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Pam Gentry of Cookeville; and four grandchildren, Carter and Caden Shanks, Kylie Sue and Garrett Bohannon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
