Funeral services for Mr. Eugene J. Dunn, 87 of Cookeville will be held Thursday, August 22 at 1 pm in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Dr. Randall Adkisson and Rev. Charles Hutchinson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Dunn's family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 – 8pm and again Thursday from 11 am until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Dunn died Monday morning, August 19, 2013 at NHC of Cookeville. He was born September 26, 1925 in Putnam County, TN to the late Beecher Rasco and Mae Bell Lafever Dunn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Helen Lollar Dunn, an infant twin sister, and two brothers, John and Troy Dunn. Mr. Dunn was a member of First Baptist Church of Cookeville for over 40 years. He served as a deacon and 5th grade Sunday School Teacher. He loved Jesus and ministered to those who were lost. Mr. Dunn was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran. While serving as a rifleman with the 177th Infantry, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Battle Stars, and the European Combat Ribbon. His service time was cut short due to a gunshot wound to his knee. He was the former owner and operator of I-40 Texaco for 36 years prior to retirement. He also owned several other service stations located in Cookeville, Nashville, and Detroit, MI. He was co-owner of Dunn Tire Company. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, gardening, and riding his John Deere tractor on his farms. He had also been learning how to play the guitar. As a resident at Morningside Assisted Living, he sang and played music regularly. He also was a member of the "Construction Crew" at Morningside. He is survived by two sons, Glen Dunn and Larry Dunn, both of Cookeville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna D. and Robert Perez of Bourg, LA; Debbie and Chris Winningham of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Christina and Robert Perez, Alex and Lily Winningham; brother and sister-in-law, William and Inez Dunn of Cookeville; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and" Chick" Neal of Cookeville; special nephew, James Lollar, of Hawaii; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chris Winningham, Glen Dunn, and Michael Neal. Serving as pallbearers are Kevin Wagner, Frank Tittle, Larry Dunn, Robert Perez Sr., Robert Perez Jr., and Andrew Dunn. Mr. Dunn's family would like to think the management and staff at Morningside Assisted Living for making a good home for him.
