Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Merritt Taylor, 83 of Cookeville, will be held at 3pm Sunday October 5 in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Mike Head and Rev. Jonathan Nelms will officiate. Interment will follow in Smyrna Cemetery. Mrs. Taylor's family will receive friends Saturday from 5 - 8 p.m. and again Sunday from 2 pm until time of services at the funeral home. Mrs. Taylor died Wednesday evening October 1, 2014 in Life Care Center of Sparta. She was born February 13, 1931 in Cookeville to the late Clarence Newton and Hester Davis Merritt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband George Edward Taylor; two brothers, Herbie and Eugene Merritt; and grandson, William Frederick Ray. Mrs. Taylor was a member of First Baptist Church Cookeville. She was a great homemaker, and will be fondly remembered as an excellent cook and gardener. She loved children and cared for several children in the community. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Connie Taylor; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Fred Ray, all of Cookeville; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Wayne Greer of Old Hickory, TN; four grandchildren, Blake Turner (Dawn Luegge) Taylor, Rachel (Kevin) Dalton, Julianne Ray and Laurabeth Ray; and three great-grandchildren, Adelyn Dawn Taylor, Elliot Grant Dalton, and Taylor Wren Dalton . Blake Taylor, Kevin Dalton, Fred Ray, Bert Merritt, Wayne Greer and David Huggins will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Tennessee, Inc. Cumberlands Office, 1459 Interstate Dr. Ste 211, Cookeville, TN 38501.
