Duncan Block

June 5, 1930 — July 5, 2014

Duncan G. Block, 84, of Baxter, TN, passed away on July 5th at Masters Nursing Home with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Block; brother Ken Block of New Martinsville, WVa; daughter Diane Finley of Baxter, Tn; son and daughter-in-law Ken and Sandy Block of Nashville, Ga; daughter and son-in-law Sue and David Qualls of Algood, Tn; daughter Laurie Block of Soddy-Daisy, Tn; grandson Greg Block and wife Jennifer and great-grandson Parker; grandson Daniel Block and wife Rachel; and grandson Matthew Block. He was preceded in death by his parents Marcell and Elizabeth Block, sister and brother-in-law Jayne and Walter Turning, and sister-in-law Patricia Block. Duncan was born June 5, 1930 in St. Louis, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served on the USS Tarawa. He attended the University of Missouri at Rolla, and during this time, he married Shirley, the love of his life, on January 22, 1955. He began his career as an electrical engineer and he and Shirley raised their family, moving several times throughout the years and finally settling in Tennessee. Duncan’s greatest joy was his family and home. Wherever they moved, he put his heart and soul into making each place a home. He was a devoted husband and father, a dedicated businessman, and good friend to many. He taught his strong values and character to his children and led by example. After retiring to this area, he played a major role in the formation and establishment of the volunteer fire department for the eastern side of Dekalb County. He continued working as an electrician for several years, and many of his neighbors’ homes benefitted from his work. He loved his life, his family, and his home. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will be 4-6 pm at Nash Grove Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 8th, followed by a Prayer Service and Remembrance. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Austin Bottom Fire Station, c/o Bob Myracle, 564 Sunny Point Rd, Baxter, TN 38544
