A Memorial Service for Douglas Dale Whitmire, age 72, of Cookeville, will be Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Dyer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:00pm until time of the service. Mr. Whitmire passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 peacefully at his home. He was of the Lutheran faith, enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, painting, sketching, reading, playing billiards and watching Jeopardy. Douglas took pleasure in growing tomatoes, learning about history, war and space as well, but most of all he really liked to make others smile. Mr. Whitmire was a veteran and proudly served our country, achieving the rank of Sergeant, in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne from 1959 to 1962. Douglas was born July 4, 1942 in Vincennes IN to Ottis Whitmire and the late Mary Helen Palk. He is survived by his companion of thirty six years, Margaret Cain, as well as his father, two children; Kelo (wife Crystal) Whitmire of Madisonville TN, and Lisa (husband Scott) Lundsford also of Madisonville TN, as well as three step children; Denise Cain (John), Billy Cain (wife Debbie), and Jimmy Cain (wife Kathy). In addition, Mr. Whitmire is survived by a sister, Sue Capps, and a brother, David Bethel. Doug was a loving grandfather to eight grandchildren; Paiden, Lexy, Bryce, Madison and Ireland Whitmire, Eric and Briget Proaps, and McKenzie Lundsford and step-grandfather to seven step-grandchildren; Amanda Silver, Stephanie Ullrich, Brandon Ullrich, Jason Cain, Billy Cain Jr., James Cain Jr. and Matthew Cain. Mr. Whitmire is also survived by one great-grandson, Landon Proaps and one step great-granddaughter, Madison Correa. Douglas will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.
