Doug Hudgens

October 4, 1947 — March 26, 2022

On Saturday, March 26, 2022 Roy Douglas (Doug) Hudgens, loving husband and dad to his two sons, passed away at the age of 74. Doug was born on October 4, 1947 in Cookeville, TN to James C. and Betty Jane Sackman Hudgens. Doug attended Jere Whitson Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1965. He attended Tennessee Technological University and received a BS and Master's degree in Chemistry. While a student he began working in the chemistry lab at Fleetguard/Cummins. This led Doug to an accomplished 47-year career at Fleetguard/Cummins as a Senior Chemist of Research and Development. His career accomplishments included the ASTM International Award of Merit (1992), Cummins Dr. Julius P. Perr Innovation Award (2001) – U.S. Patent “Diesel Engine Cooling Systems Compositions”, and ASTM International ‘Engine Coolants Hall of Fame Award (2015). On Aug. 29, 1969 he married Sara Prescott. They resided in Cookeville, TN where they raised two sons, Christopher and Shawn. Doug was a worldly man with a passion for reading, chemistry, and coolants. He loved snow skiing, playing golf with friends, and traveling the world with his beloved wife, Sara. Doug had a giving heart and enjoyed giving back to his community. Doug was involved with Jaycees, SOCM, and NAACP in Cookeville, TN. Doug enjoyed playing the guitar for his granddaughters, church, nursing homes, the Cookeville Dulcimer Society, Soul Survivors, and Dodson Branch Music Group. Doug was preceded in death by his father, James C., and his mother, Betty Jane. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sara Prescott Hudgens; his two children, Christopher and Shawn (Kellie); granddaughters, Kendall and Harper, and his brother, Jimmy Hudgens (Martha), and sister-in-law Marnie Walsh (Jack Stalhman). Visitation of family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 2nd, 12pm-2pm with funeral service to follow at First United Methodist Church (FUMC), 165 E. Broad St., Cookeville TN. Dr. Kevin Conrad will officiate. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to FUMC Cookeville-Food Pantry, SOCM, NAACP.
