Dorothy Estes

Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Byrd Estes, age 94 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, January 5th at 11 a.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Whitney Mitchell will officiate. Her family will receive friends Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Estes died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Signature HealthCare of Putnam County following an extended illness. She was born March 10, 1922, in Winston Salem, NC to the late J R and Hallie Frazier Byrd; raised a Baptist; and was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Coast Guard SPARs during World War II. She and husband O.T. Estes moved to Cookeville in 1963 and joined Cookeville First United Methodist Church. She was involved in activities at Tennessee Tech University and held the position of President of the TTU Women's Club, Town and Gown and PEO. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Byrd and Richard Byrd and by sisters, Betty Jo Strader and Ruby Hord. She leaves behind her husband of 70 years, O.T. Estes, children Jerry Estes, Peggy (John) Coster, Steve (Brenda) Estes and David (Colleen) Estes, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and by sister, Faye Anderson. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Backslider's Class at Cookeville FUMC. Dorothy's family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers who have continuously cared for her for the past several years.
