Devonia Mcgee

September 24, 1925 — September 18, 2021

Devonia Catherine Brotherton McGee, 96, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, September 18, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 15, 1925 in Algood, TN to the late Dewey Homer Brotherton and Bertha Phy Brotherton. Devonia graduated from Algood High School, attended vocational training in Nashville, TN, then came back to Algood eventually to meet and marry her precious husband Jack and raise a family. Devonia was a loving wife and mother who spent her days taking care of her family, her home and the “little ladies” who lived around her. When she was younger she would often bake a cake or pie and spend an hour each afternoon visiting different ladies who were widowed or at home by themselves. Her husband, Jack, always had a beautiful garden on their farm and she canned or froze everything that he grew. She loved to make jams and jellies and passed that trait on to her granddaughter Chelsea. Devonia was always up for an adventure with one of her daughters and was happiest when she was with them and their families. She was an active member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville for more than 66 years. She is survived by her daughters Dr. Kim (Allen) Wright of Cookeville and Janet McGee of Louisville, TN. One granddaughter, Chelsea (Bradley) Mercer of Greeneville, TN, and two great grandchildren, Katherine Susannah Mercer and Mason McGee Mercer. Daughter by choice, Ara Rickman of Louisville, TN, brother Robert Brotherton, sisters Dorothy Nichols and Robbie Wilmoth all of Cookeville, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Devonia was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Quinton C. (Jack) McGee, and an infant brother Ray Douglas Brotherton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 25th, at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville, TN with visitation from 10:00 to 12:00 and the funeral immediately following at noon. Reverend Christian Smith and Dr. Charles McCaskey will officiate. Interment will follow in the Smith Chapel Cemetery in Cookeville, TN. Pall bearers will be family members. Memorial contributions may be made to Cookeville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 565 East Tenth Street, Cookeville, TN 38501. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation and love to the ladies who helped care for Devonia in her home: Sherry Carter, Diana Nivens, Denise Burchett, Agnus Moody and Flora Walker. Your sunny dispositions and careful nurturing allowed our loved one to remain in her home. Also, to Dr. Jane Ann Gotcher who has been our earthly great physician caring for both parents and their family. Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (931)526-6111.
