Funeral Services for Mr. Delbert Sylvester Young, age 89, of Cookeville, will be held Monday, October 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Dodson Branch Freewill Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Sunday October 19, 2014 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm in the Chapel of Dyer Funeral home and again on Monday, October 20, 2014 from 12:00pm until time of service at the Church. Burial will be in the Dodson Branch Cemetery. Mr. Young passed away Saturday, October 18, 2014 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Delbert was born March 24, 1925 in Lincoln Nebraska to the late John Young and Eva Smith Young. He enjoyed his family, sitting on his porch swing reading his Bible and being at home in Sourwood. Mr. Young and his wife, Lula, were long time members of Dodson Branch Freewill Baptist Church. His love for music was passed to his children and his kind, gentle spirit was displayed to everyone he met. Delbert retired as a mechanic from City of Cookeville and Carlen Motor Company. Before becoming a mechanic, Delbert worked as a carpenter, building homes around Cookeville and helping develop the Tech Campus. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lula Mae Haney Young, two sons, Ronnie (Wilma) Young of Dodson Branch; Eddie (Dale) Young of Gulfport, Mississippi; one daughter; Sandra (Brian) Johns of West Chester, Ohio; one son-in-law, Bobby Bell of Cookeville and one sister, Hassie (Lannie) Maberry of the Dodson Branch Community. He also leaves four granddaughters, Ronda (Chuck) Haney, Lora (Jacen) Jared, Miranda Young & Lacie (Daniel) Dillion; three grandsons, Mark (April) Brewer, Jamie (Leslie) Brewer & Sam Young; five great-grandchildren, Isaac (Ashley) Haney, Luke (Audrey) Haney, Jordan Allen, Jesse & Kelli Hooten. Delbert is also survived by a host of friends and family. In addition to his parents, Delbert is preceded in death by his daughter, Patsy Young Bell, brothers, Jesse, Joe, Jim, and an infant brother Charlie Young and sisters, Verna Young and Golda Inger. Pallbearers will be grandsons & great-grandsons. Bro. Ronnie Dunn, Bro. Eddie Young and Bro. Ken Haney will officiate the service.
