Funeral services for Mr. James DAVID Stokes, age 68 of the Cumberland Cove Community near Monterey, will be held Tuesday August 18 at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cookeville with Bishop Tom Hill officiating. Graveside services and interment, with military honors, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville. David's family will receive friends Tuesday from 8 a.m. until service time at the church. David died Saturday August 15, 2015 at Hospice of Cumberland County in Crossville. He was born August 27, 1946 in Harlan, Kentucky to the late Herman and Ella Mae Fowler Stokes. David was a retired General Contractor with Fire-Side Homes; a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War; and a member of Cookeville Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. While living in Orlando, Florida he served many years as a Scout Master and received the Wood Master Award. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fan of nearly all sports. To his family he was the "Best Dad in the World". Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Michelle Cornett Stokes (whom he married January 24, 1966 in Orlando, FL); two daughters and a son-in-law, Darby and Matt Mouritsen of Brighten, Colorado, and Caitlin Stokes of Cookeville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Drew and Lucinda Stokes of Brownsville, TX, Trent Stokes of Crossville, and Gant and Casey Stokes of Provo, Utah; five grandchildren, Maren, Tyler, and Audrey Mouritsen, Ansley Mae and Jackson Stokes; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Ed Van Alton of Monterey. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements (931) 839-2266.
