A memorial service with military honors for Mr. Fred "David" Goolsby, age 79 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, September 29th at 4:00 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Brothers Ben Smith and Don Blackwell will officiate.


His family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.


David passed away Monday, September 26th, 2022 at NHC Healthcare, Cookeville. He was born November 4, 1942 in Woodbury, TN to the late Fred Davis Goolsby and Mary Elizabeth McFerrin Goolsby.


He was raised in Algood and was a 1960 graduate of Algood School. He then enlisted and proudly served his country in the United States Navy.


David was a man of many interests and abilities who, although small in stature, had a big, outgoing personality. Dave enjoyed success in drag racing in the 1960s. Since then, he has been a classic car enthusiast. He worked for Sears in Nashville as a tire and appliance salesman for 21 years and earned many awards and distinctions. He also worked for Autozone delivering auto parts for 23 years and was cofounder of Music City Rod Shop in Nashville. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing with his friends and brothers, camping at Long Branch and rafting the Ocoee River. He was a lifelong fan of the Tennessee Vols. During his retirement, David loved going to the YMCA with his friends. He was always known to hand out candies to people in the community as he went about his daily errands.


He attended Willow Ave Church of Christ for the past several years.


He is survived by his daughter, Dana Sexton and husband Avery, of Oneida, TN ; granddaughters, Aubrey and Amelia "Millie" Sexton; brother, Buddy Goolsby and wife Carole, of Sparta; sister, Pam Goolsby Britton; and by nieces and nephews, Tammy Goolsby, Mike Goolsby and Aston Miles.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Goolsby; and by nephews, Jason Michael Goolsby and Greg Goolsby.


Memorial contributions are suggested to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
