Mr. George "David" Mayberry, age 78 of Cookeville, returned to his heavenly home on Sunday, February 10, 2019 after an extended illness. David was born to the late Oplis and Ruby Mayberry in Jackson County, TN on Saturday October 19, 1940. He served 22 1/2 years in the 278th TN National Guard Army Reserve. He drove a truck over the road for 38 years, the last 18 years were for Averitt Express from where he retired in 2000. He filled his retirement days with draft horses, mules, cows, gardening, wood working, quilting, farming and family. David was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Cookeville. He was ordained as a deacon on August 19, 2012 at Colonial View Baptist Church, one of his proudest accomplishments. David is survived by his wife of 60 years, Retha Riddle Mayberry, whom he married on December 23, 1958; one son, Ronnie (Vickie) Mayberry of Cookeville; two daughters, Lisa Hammons (Billy Handy) and Marcie (Greg) Groves of Cookeville; grandchildren: Megan (Kyle) Fuller of Hermitage, TN, Maicie (Jason) Hodge, Kala (Heath) Randolph, James (Rachel Gragg) Hammons, Andrew and Emma Manzaro all of Cookeville; great grandchildren: Caroline and Myles Fuller, Eloise Hodge and soon to arrive Amelia Hodge; and one sister, Faye McCaleb of Cookeville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tim Hammons. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13th at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Pastor Scott McKinney officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. His family will receive friends Tuesday, February 12th from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of service. Pallbearers are James Hammons, Andrew Manzaro, Jason Hodge, Heath Randolph, Mark Maberry, and Daniel Witt. Honorary Pallbearers are 278th TN National Guard and Averitt Express linehaul drivers.
