Daniel F. Toner, Sr., age 87, passed away on the morning of June 4, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Collier Toner, two sons, Daniel F. Toner, Jr., and James E. Toner, and sister, Helen Rolen. He was born on May 22, 1931 in Silver Spring, MD, to the late Harold and Adeline Toner. Daniel F. Toner, Sr. received his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1952 and his Master's and PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1956. He served two years as a Lieutenant in the Air Force at its Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Later, he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a materials scientist. At the Continental Can Company, he managed new materials development for new cans. After leaving Continental Can, he worked for Campbell Soup Container Company as Vice President of Container Research. During his career, Dr. Toner wrote several technical papers outlining his research on packaging and packaging materials. In retirement, Dr. Toner consulted on metal packaging for many clients that included the international steel industry, food processing companies, and industry associations. His research reduced the amount of lead in metal containers. Dr. Toner's burial service with military honors will be held Saturday, June 22, at 2 PM at Cookeville City Cemetery.
