Cortley Hugh Burroughs

On Wednesday, August 29, 2018, the Rev. Dr. Cortley Hugh Burroughs II, passed away near his home in Berkeley, California, at the age of 72. Hugh was born on February 21, 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the Rev. Dr. Cortley Hugh and Kathleen Davis Burroughs. He graduated from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa in 1968 and received a Doctorate of Ministry in 1979 from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California. On June 9, 1979, he married Gail Emily Lee. They raised two sons, John and Robert. Hugh served the Presbyterian Church (USA) as a faculty member and Director of Church Relations at SFTS, as well as on the General Assembly Council of the national church. His chairmanship of the Property Committee led to an active, years-long ministry involving the denomination's schools and hospitals in Pakistan. For 30 years, he produced and hosted a monthly program, "Mosaic," for KPIX-CBS TV in San Francisco. Hugh was primarily a pastor. He served congregations in Oakland, El Cerrito, San Francisco and Santa Monica in California and First Presbyterian Church, Roswell, New Mexico where he retired as Pastor Emeritus in 2012. He was predeceased by his grandparents W.C. and Nettie Davis of Cookeville, Tennessee and Hugh and Ethel Burroughs of Jasper, Tennessee and his parents, Cortley and Kathleen Davis Burroughs of Alton, Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Gail; his sister, Kathryn; his stepsons John and Robert; his grandsons, Theodore and Hampton as well as aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends. Rev. Burroughs' ashes will be interred with those of his parents at the Cookeville City Cemetery, Cookeville, Tennessee on May 11, 2019. The liturgy will be read by the Rev.
