COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Dr. Colleen Constance Carris Hughes, PhD, RN, born on March 2, 1937, in Akron, Ohio, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 24, 2025, in Cookeville, Tennessee. Colleen was a beloved figure in both her family and professional communities, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education, health, and service.

Colleen's academic journey led her to become a leader in nursing education. She taught nursing at Oregon State University and served as the Executive Director for Mountain Health Connections. Her commitment to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals was matched only by her passion for public health, supported by her Doctor of Philosophy degree obtained from Oregon State University.

In addition to her esteemed career, Colleen was a proud volunteer who devoted countless hours to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the American Public Health Association (APHA), and Public Health Counseling. Her extensive volunteer work exemplified her commitment to improving the lives of others.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Colleen was a woman of many interests. She enjoyed painting, was an avid reader, and was known for her collection of Indian artifacts. Her love for travel allowed her to explore the world and immerse herself in new cultures, experiences that enriched her understanding and appreciation of diversity.

Colleen attended The River Community Church in Cookeville, where her spirit of community and fellowship resonated with those around her.

She is survived by her children: Greg (Brenda) Hughes, Sharon Hughes, Tom Hughes, Mike Hughes, Anandi Hughes, Joe Hughes, and Tim Hughes; along with her grandchildren, Damion Hughes, Isabella Hughes, Tad Farris, John Michael Farris, and Dawn Hughes.

Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Virgil Carris and Lois Lillian Potter Carris; her husband, Harold Hughes; her son, Jeremy Hughes; her grandson, Ben Hughes; and her twin sister, Corene Carris.

Per Colleen's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes buried with her late husband Harold Hughes at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Immediate family will celebrate her life at a later date.

Her remarkable life and profound contributions to both her family and society will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege to know her.
