Funeral services for Martha Charlene Huddleston, age 93 of Cookeville, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday February 26 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Dr. Charles McCaskey will officiate. Interment will follow at Shipley Cemetery. Her family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time. Charlene passed away Thursday, February 24 at Cedar Hills Senior Living in Cookeville. She was born February 2,1929 in Byrdstown, TN to the late Printis Proctor and Virginia Ada Wright Rains. Upon graduating from Pickett County High School, she attended Tennessee Technological University and attained a B.S. in Education. She then embarked on a 46-year career in education, starting with 6 years in Ohio and then another 40 years in Putnam County at Parkview Elementary School. She was deeply committed to her students and community while living a life reflecting her strong Christian faith. As a charter member of Midway Baptist Church in Cookeville, TN, she was an active participant as a member of the choir and Sunday school teacher. Following the death of her beloved husband, William Clifton Huddleston, a special collection of caregivers lovingly supported her in her final years. She is survived by a son-in-law, Bill Browning of Cookeville, TN; a daughter-in-law, Julia Huddleston Brown of Cookeville, TN; grandsons, Michael Browning of Cookeville, TN, Scott Huddleston (Rebecca) of Johnson City, TN, and Tyler Huddleston (Becky) of Chicago, IL; great grandchildren, Elaine and Thomas Huddleston of Johnson City, TN, and Will and Paige Huddleston of Chicago, IL; siblings-in-law, Kenneth Huddleston of Cookeville, TN, Jaunita Kane of Johnson City, TN, and Mary Chaffin of Melbourne, FL. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Dr. William Michael Huddleston; daughter, Martha Susan Browning; siblings, Virginia Helen Rains “Tootie” Cross, Alma Rains, Ruby Upchurch, Howard Rains, Dorothy Hassler, Fred Rains, and J.C. Rains; siblings-in-law, Betty Jones and Robert Huddleston. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of the Cumberland at https://www.heartofthecumberland.org.
