Funeral services for Catherine Walker Compton, age 92 of Oak Ridge and formerly of Cookeville will be Tuesday March 29 at 12 noon from the Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with interment in the Cookeville City Cemetery. Bro. Joe Roberts will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Compton died March 24, 2016 in Greenfield Assisted Living in Oak Ridge. Mrs. Compton was born in Cookeville October 25, 1923, the daughter of May Hensley Clark and Leslie James Walker. She was a Cookeville native and resident until 2000 when she and her husband, Ross, relocated to Oak Ridge. She was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University and was employed for 27 years as the secretary at Collegeside Church of Christ where she was a member for over 40 years. She was a charter member of the Cookeville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and served for 26 years. She was a girl scout leader, a cub scout den mother and PTA president as well as a member of the Cumberland Art Society, Old Walton Road Chapter of the DAR, and the First Families of Tennessee. In Oak Ridge she was a member of the New York Avenue Church of Christ and a volunteer at the Methodist Medical Center Hospitality House. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years Ross H. Compton, her brother Dr. James Walker, and her sister and her husband Willeen Walker Stanton and Layton F. Stanton, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Susan and her husband James Lowe of Virginia Beach, VA, her son Dr. David Compton and his wife Andrea of Powell, TN, her granddaughter Amy Rosa and her husband Matthew of Powell, TN and her sister-in-law Mrs. Mary Walker of Gainesville, FL. She is also survived by brothers-in-law and their wives Glenn and Betty Jo Compton of Malta, MT, and Kay and Virginia Compton of Winter Haven, Fl. Additional family members include a niece Cathryn Stanton Howington and nephews Bruce, Leslie, Bill and John Stanton and Jim and Bart Walker. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Collegeside Church of Christ or the University Christian Student Center, (both at 252 East 9th St., Cookeville, TN 38501), New York Avenue Church of Christ, 219 New York Ave, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or the charity of choice.
