Memorial Services for Rev. Billy John Thomas Hauer, 81, of Algood, will be held Monday, August 17th at 1 p.m. at Algood United Methodist Church. Rev. Pat Smith and Rev. Brent Davis will officiate. Mr. Hauer's family will receive friends Monday from 12 p.m. until service time at the church. Billy died Sunday evening, August 9, 2015 in Signature HealthCARE of Putnam County in Algood. Billy was born November 11, 1933 in Huntsville, AL to the late Christian Ewing and Anna Lee Cotten Hauer. He was a 1952 graduate of Huntsville High School, a 1956 graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and received a Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University in 1959. He faithfully served as pastor of Presbyterian churches (U.S.A.) in White Pine, TN, Memphis, Missouri and for a short time in Knoxville, IL. After leaving fulltime ministry, he worked with the state of Illinois as a mental health social worker at Galesburg Mental Health Center in Galesburg, IL. He earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Iowa while working in Galesburg. He and wife Carole moved to Algood in 2000 and he attended Algood United Methodist Church. He will be remembered as a man of character and as a people person who enjoyed spending time with friends and family and playing bridge. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Carole Calahan Hauer (whom he married August 10, 1963 in Knoxville, TN); sons, Randolph "Randy" Carey Hauer of Boulder, CO and John Mark Hauer of Huntsville; brother, Christian E. (Elizabeth) Hauer, Jr. of Huntsville; nephew and niece, John Hauer and Anna (Yuri) Zelinsky; great niece and nephew, Olena and Peter Zelinsky, nephew Daniel Martin and by sister-in-law, Linda Smithers, both of Cookeville. Memorial contributions are suggested and can be made to Algood United Methodist Church, 135 W Main St, Algood, TN 38506 and/or to Calahan/Romines Scholarship Fund at Tennessee Tech University, PO Box 1915, Cookeville, TN 38505.
