Bill Dodson

October 25, 1936 — February 23, 2024

William Howard Dodson, fondly known as Bill to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024, at the Overton County Health and Rehabilitation. Born on October 25, 1936, in Rickman, Tennessee, Bill's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family.

Bill was a man of the earth, a lifelong farmer who took pride in his tobacco and cattle. His hands, though rough from years of labor, were always ready to offer a firm handshake or a pat on the back. Bill's work ethic extended beyond the fields; he was also a dedicated truck driver with Service Transport, and he served his country with honor as a US Army veteran.

A pillar of his community, Bill was a member of the Zion Hill Methodist Church.. He was known for his unique tradition of handing out $2 bills to friends and children, a small gesture that brought immense joy to those around him. Bill had the rare ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met, and his warm, engaging personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Bill's love for bluegrass music was a thread that wove through his life, often attending bluegrass festivals where he would tap his foot and hum along to the familiar tunes. His dedication to his family was evident in the way he lived his life, always working hard to provide and showing his love through his actions. He cherished watching his grandchildren, supporting them at their basketball games, and being a constant presence in their lives.

Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He is survived by his son, Donnie Dodson and his partner Chris Hamilton; his daughter, Veronica Clouse and her husband David; his sisters, Betty Jo Watkins, Jean Dunn, and Janice Matthews; his cherished grandchildren, Lewey Clouse (Heather), Susanna Clouse, Grace Watson (Evan), and Adaline Clouse; and his adored great-grandchildren, Hames Clouse and Woods Watson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Lattie Dodson and Eunice Willet Dodson; his beloved wife, Bobbie Sue Hayes Dodson; and his son, Lonnie Dodson. Bill's family will hold onto the memories and the values he instilled in each of them, carrying on his legacy through generations.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday February 25 and again Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating Bill's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the same location. Bill will be laid to rest with military honors at Dodson Chapel Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country and his community with unwavering dedication.
