Bettye Whitehead Bussell passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family on March 15, 2021 just after five o’clock. Bettye B, as she was lovingly called by all who knew her, was born on October 25, 1934 to Haywood and Elizabeth Whitehead of Cookeville. A lifelong resident of Cookeville, other than a brief time during her husband’s service, she raised her family here and was a constant in the community and in business. Often described as one-of-a-kind, Bettye B stood out in a crowd for her elegance, her grace, her kindness, and her strength. She loved the finer things in life… classical music, art, a well-appointed table, and formal Sunday brunch. She embodied Southern grace and good manners. She was understated yet always dressed-to-the-nines. She was a beautiful lady very comfortable in a man’s world. At a time when others were at home, Bettye B forged a career in banking before finding her true life’s passion in the real estate industry. She loved it, taught it, and gave her heart to it for over forty years during which time she held offices, won awards, and owned her own firm. But accolades and awards aside, it was the love of her colleagues and community, the art of the deal, and the service she provided that drove her daily. Bettye B was married to her first of two great loves, her husband, Burl Bussell, on March 29, 1954. They remained devoted to each other for 47 years until he preceded her in death in 2001. Also preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Whitehead; she is survived by her sister, Linda Charlene Whitehead; daughter Tracy Bussell; daughter Linda Lee Bussell Welch; son-in-law, Shane Welch; and extended family Michael Evans and John Carr. She also leaves her second great love, her only grandson, Spencer Fields Bussell Welch, who was her constant source of joy. She was especially thankful for Lori Greenwood, the Wells family, and Jason Holt who showed her so much kindness, wonderful quality of care, and constant love over the last few years for which her family is eternally grateful. A celebration of life was held for both her and her husband on what would have been their 66th anniversary on March 29 at 5 o’clock at the TTU Golden Eagle Golf Club. The family extended an invitation to all who felt comfortable but if you were unable to attend and want to honor Bettye B… please share a Sunday brunch with your family, go for a drive on a beautiful day to look at new homes, or just enjoy some 5 o’clock cheer. Donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity, Cookeville First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, or the Putnam County Animal Shelter. Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. (931)526-6111 Share your thoughts and memories at www.hhhfunerals.com.
