Barbara Medley

MONTEREY -- Funeral services for Barbara Gail Medley, 80, of Monterey, will be held Friday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Welch Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Brian McElwain will officiate. Mrs. Medley's family will receive friends Thursday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again Friday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. She died Monday morning, May 27, 2019 in Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation in Monterey. She was born May 15, 1939 in Wilder, TN to the late Walter Dewey and Beulah Alda Smith Scroggins. She was a graduate of Monterey High School. She and her late husband Larry lived in Kingston, TN and Simpsonville, SC before returning to Monterey in 1978. Barbara was manager of the cafeteria at Monterey High School. She and her coworkers worked hard to provide delicious meals that students enjoyed for many years. Prior to retirement, she moved to a brand new kitchen with the opening of Burks Middle School and was delighted to prepare meals for her grandchildren who attended there. Barbara was a longtime, active member of Monterey First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Larry Gill Medley and by sisters, Peggy Merrill, Sandy Zachary and Patsy Griffin. Her family includes her three sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Anthony Medley, Larry Gill Medley Jr. and Jonathan Warren and wife Tara Medley, all of Monterey; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Medley of Anderson, Ind., Tyler (Julie) Medley, Jonathan (Brittany) Medley, Courtney (Elijah) Whittaker, Leara Henry, Alyssa Henry and Isabella Turner; great grandchildren, Lorelai Medley, Lakelynn Whittaker, Allyson and Karleigh Medley and Blaine and Carson. Memorial contributions may be made to The Pursuit of Excellence Endowment Fund at Tennessee Tech University, PO Box 5047, Cookeville, TN 38505. Larry and Barbara established this endowment to provide financial assistance for teachers in the Monterey School System to obtain a master's degree. Jeremy Medley, Jonathan Medley, Tyler Medley, Darryl Davis, Windell Griffin, Tony Medley and Elijah Whittaker will serve as pallbearers.
