MONTEREY-Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Horn Gill, 83, of Monterey, were held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11 am from the Chapel of Horner Funeral Home with Rev. Gaylord (Bud) Rich and Rev. James Staggs officiated. Interment followed in Welch Memorial Cemetery. Barbara died Monday morning, January 11th at Cookeville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Wednesday November 24, 1937 in Monterey to the late Daniel Welch and Wahlena Rogers Horn. After graduating from Monterey High School, she attended Trevecca Nazarene University. Barbara began a career as a legal secretary for attorney John Gill. She also worked for a number of years as secretary and bookkeeper at Monterey High School. An accomplished seamstress, she later enjoyed working at Glenda's Fabric Store. Until her recent illness, she made remembrance bookmarks for families at Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and Horner Funeral Home. Barbara was dedicated to her family. She and husband, Lemuel married August 19, 1967, and she became a devoted wife and stepmother to Lemuel's children. Together, they built a legacy of home, family and community. A wonderful cook and homemaker, she will be remembered for the delicious dishes she lovingly prepared from the recipes she collected over the years. She was a long-time member of the Monterey Church of the Nazarene. She had a giving spirit and found joy and contentment through helping others. Survivors include two sisters, Mary (Rev. Gaylord "Bud") Rich of Watertown, and Sara Tinch of Cookeville; stepchildren, Jack (Dianne) Gill and Jill (David) Horner of Cookeville; grandchildren, Jennifer (Billy) Heady of Knoxville, Chad (Lauren) Gill of Franklin and Clint (Rachel) Gill of Cookeville, Chris (Chasity) Howard of Cookeville, and Mark (Erin) Howard of Richmond, KY; Jason (Bridget) Horner, Brad (Jessica) Horner and Erin (Jason) Gaw, all of Cookeville; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; aunt, Delores Rogers of Monterey; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a nephew, Daniel Frederick McGraw and special "sister," Betty Sue Smith. The family received friends Saturday morning from 10 am until service time at Horner Funeral Home in Monterey. Horner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
