Albert Phillips Ramsey, Sr., 90, of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on April 17, 2020, at Signature Health Care in Putnam County, TN. Mr. Ramsey was born August 16, 1929 in Algood, TN, the fourth of eight children and named after his paternal grandfather, to the late Robert Dewey, Sr and Byrnie Louella (Phillips) Ramsey. Due to the current pandemic, there will be no public visitation or funeral. A private graveside ceremony for his immediate family only will occur on Monday April 20 at Phillips Cemetery in Putnam County. A Celebration of Albert’s life will be scheduled for his friends and extended family at a future date. Mr. Ramsey joined the US Navy shortly after completing high school in 1948. After completing his basic training at Great Lakes, IL., Mr. Ramsey was stationed in Norfolk, VA, the Philippine Islands and at NAS Millington, TN prior to completing his service in 1955. Mr. Ramsey married Fannie Ruth Buck in 1954 and they had five children. They remained happily married for 47 years before her passing on November 14th, 2001. Mr. Ramsey married Gloria Annette Roberts Harp in 2007. The couple had just celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. The son of a carpenter, Mr. Ramsey worked with his father and uncles building several houses in and around Cookeville. In 1960, Mr. Ramsey purchased and operated the Trailways Bus Station just off the square behind the old Maddux Hardware Store. In the 1980’s Mr. Ramsey built a new building on Palkway Drive, adding the Greyhound Bus lines. At its busiest time, it was common to see 12-14 buses stop throughout the day as they ran their schedules. Mr. Ramsey and his son also started a pickup and delivery service that delivered packages that had arrived by bus throughout the community for nearly 20 years. In 2013, Mr. Ramsey “officially” retired at the age of 83 after 52 years of serving the community. As a licensed pilot, Mr. Ramsey owned and flew several private planes at the Cookeville airport before its closing. In 1975, Mr. Ramsey purchased is first Corvair which started a new passion that lasted nearly 45 years. Mr. Ramsey was always one to stay busy, when he wasn’t working at the bus station, he could be found on his 30-acre farm tending to his garden, cutting firewood or tinkering with his car collection. He was a long-time member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church, where is served as a deacon and usher during in his 40+ years as an active member. After retiring, Mr. Ramsey could be found at one of many breakfast joints around town reminiscing with his friends, playing Domino’s or spending time with his siblings and his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Fannie Ruth Buck Ramsey; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Martha Ramsey Eldridge and Carley D. Eldridge; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert Dewey Ramsey and Bobbie Mai Manning Ramsey; brother-in-law, Charles Bilyeu; brother and sister-in-law Glenn Harold Ramsey and Jane Ann Holloway Ramsey; sisters-in-law Alma Mae Merck Ramsey and Georgea Fay Merck Mixon Ramsey . He is survived by his wife, Gloria Annette Roberts Harp Ramsey and was the proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his five children and their spouses, Becky (Gary) Carwile, Phil (Yolanda) Ramsey, Cathy (Wayne) Lush, Judy (Tracy) Davis and Jeff (Cindy) Ramsey; 10 grandchildren, Rachel (Brandon) McDonald, Josh (Emily) Carwile, Erin Carwile, Dakota (Carter) Watson, Cierra Ramsey, Justin (Hannah) Davis, Ethan (Alyssa) Davis, Jared Davis, Kierston (Tyler) Lannom, and Peyton Bible; 12 great-grandchildren, Emilee, Natalee and Cloee McDonald, Lucy and Ezra Carwile, Livie Carter, Emma Grace, Benjamin and Ava Beth Davis, Zoie and Mazie Lannom, Raylon Crosslin and one more arriving later this year; his siblings and their spouses; Juanita Bilyeu, John (Michelle) Ramsey, Frank Ramsey, and Mary (Grover) Bennett; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Washington Avenue Baptist Church Benevolence Fund or the Phillips Cemetery Trust Fund Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
