Wayne Evans

A Celebration of Life for Robert Wayne Evans, 64, of Cookeville will be held Wednesday, May 11, at 1 p.m. at Cookeville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Max Mayo and Rev. Drew Shelley officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Fredonia Cemetery in Overton County. Wayne passed away Sunday afternoon May 8, 2011 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He was born November 27, 1946 in Cookeville, TN to the late Robert D. and Pauline Poston Evans. Wayne was a member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church where he served as the 5th grade Sunday School teacher. He was a Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Navy who served with Seabees Unit MU301. Wayne spent his entire career in the asphalt industry. He held positions at Hubbard Construction in Orlando, FL, and McDowell Enterprises. He most recently was responsible for Business Development with Wirtgen America. Wayne took on various leadership positions for the asphalt industry at the national and state level. He became Chairman of the National Asphalt Pavement Association and helped initiate the asphalt industry's support of the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Evans was instrumental in the creation of the successful World of Asphalt meeting and trade show. He also played an important role regarding the introduction of Warm Mix Asphalt technology in the USA. At the state level, Wayne was past President of the Asphalt Contractors Association of Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Sandra Evans. Wayne is survived by his wife, Katherine DeFriese Evans (whom he married June 3, 1967 in Chattanooga, TN); son, Rob Evans of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two daughters, Betsy Evans of Atlanta, GA; Angie Evans and her fiancé, Brian Griffin and his children, Miles, Ellis and Neil Griffin all of Houston, TX; sister, Melanie Henricks of Ooltewah, TN; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Steven and Ruth Ellen Evans of Marietta, GA; and Terry and Mimi Evans of Dalton, GA, eight nieces and nephews, and nine great-nieces and nephews. Wayne had a large extended family consisting of many aunts, uncles and cousins. Wayne"�s family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and again Wednesday immediately following the services at the church. Pallbearers will be Cheston Blackshear, Brian Richardson, Josh Evans, Terry Evans, Blake Vaughn, Luke Brown, Thomas Evans, Ben DeBerry, Michael Henricks and Tommy Wilson.
