Vivian Fraser

d. May 26, 2012

Funeral services for Mrs. Vivian Grant Brumfield Fraser, 88, of Cookeville will be held Thursday, May 31, at 11 AM at St. Michael"s Episcopal Church with Father Herb Catlin and Rev. Joe Weatherly officiating. Entombment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. A reception will be held back at St. Michael"s afterwards. Mrs. Fraser died Saturday morning, May 26, 2012 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Mrs. Fraser was born December 22, 1923 in Danville, Virginia to the late Clarence Dameron Brumfield and Annie Mae Brumfield Webb. In the Forties, she worked for the US Government in the War Finance Division of the Treasury Department. All war bond tours were booked from this office, and celebrities came to the office in person to pick up their travel orders and itineraries. Among the celebrities that Mrs. Fraser met and talked with were Tyrone Power, Victor Mature, Paul Whiteman, Caesar Romero, Judy Garland, Joan Fontaine, Alan Ladd, Eleanor Roosevelt and the three surviving Marines who planted the flag on Mt. Surabachi, Iwo Jima. She also had the privilege of having dinner at the Pentagon seated with one of the most famous men in the world at that time, General Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower. In 1958, she and her late husband, Dr. Richard Hobbs Fraser (retired Dean of Arts & Sciences Department and former history professor at TTU) moved with their daughter Catherine to Cookeville. They immediately joined Saint Michael"s Episcopal Church where she remained an active member for over 54 years, as long as her health permitted. For 50 plus years, she was a member, former president and held many offices in the PEO Chapter L (Philanthropic Education Organization). She was also an avid reader and member of Cookeville Book Lovers Club. She had a passion for life and loved music, dancing, and being with people. A true "people-person" with a sharp sense of humor, she was generous beyond measure and always had time for her friends. Above all, she loved her family and was a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and sister. She will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Horace Dameron Brumfield. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine & Michael Brock of Houston, TX; granddaughter, Melissa Brock of Nashville; brother and sister-in-law, Shirley Martin & June Brumfield of Danville, VA; sister-in-law, Jaci Brumfield of Newark, DE; and many nieces, nephews and other loved ones. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Michael"s Episcopal Church 604 North Washington Avenue Cookeville, TN 38501. Mrs. Fraser"s family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at St. Michael"s Church.
