Sara Ruth Lewis, a beacon of loving kindness and gentle grace, passed away on December 4, 2023, at the age of 93. Born on July 8, 1930, in Putnam County, Tennessee, Sara was a lifelong resident who cherished her roots. She departed this life in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Sara was a proud alumna of the former Cookeville Central High School, where she graduated in 1948, and she furthered her education by attending Tennessee Tech University. Her commitment to education was not just academic; Sara dedicated many years of service as a secretary within the Putnam County School System. She was a familiar and friendly face at Sycamore Elementary and the former Cookeville Junior High School, where she touched the lives of countless students and educators.
Family was the cornerstone of Sara's life, and she was a cherished matriarch who nurtured her relationships with her children and grandchildren with exceptional love and attention. Her family fondly remembers her for the special bond she shared with each of them, a testament to her loving nature.
Sara's interests reflected the joy she found in simple pleasures and community spirit. She was a regular at the Cookeville and Algood Senior Citizens Centers, where she delighted in the camaraderie of her fellow card players. Tennessee Tech basketball games were also a favorite pastime, and she could often be found cheering on the team.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Sara experienced the sweetness of her pleasant and loving nature firsthand. She was a longtime member of Willow Avenue Church of Christ. Her faith was an integral part of her life.
Sara was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Horace Lewis; her parents, Thurman and Nannie Lou Bohannon Bullington, and her siblings, Dimple Campbell, Reba Migliore, Willie Clay Bullington, and Virgle Ray Bullington. She is survived by sons and daughters in law, Steve and Nancy Lewis of Cookeville and Scott and Jane Lewis of Ooltewah, TN; grandchildren, John (Caroline) Lewis, Libby (Reza) Mirghavami; Jared (Becca) Lewis and Jason Lewis; great grandchildren, Lucas Lewis, Lora Claire and
Lucy Kate Lewis and Riley and Callie Mirghavami; and by nieces and nephews, Martin Migliore, Mike Migliore, Becky Wood, Kathy Morton, and Sheree Osborn.
Those who knew Sara would describe her as the epitome of loving, kind, and gentle. Her presence was a comfort, her smile a light, and her legacy one of compassion and warmth. She leaves behind a pattern for others to follow.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sara Ruth Lewis, age 93 of Cookeville, will be held Friday, December 8, 2023 at 12:00 pm in the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Bro. Clarence Deloach will officiate.
Her family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
