Mike Goolsby

July 4, 1947 — March 18, 2022

Michael L. “Mike” Goolsby (74), of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away Friday, March 18, 2022. The son of the late Fred and Mary Goolsby, Mike grew up in Algood until his family moved to Cookeville in 1960. Mike attended Central High School in Cookeville. The summers were spent working for Builders Supply Company. Upon graduating, Mike enlisted in the Army for three years. Mike was deployed to Vietnam for a tour of duty. He served as a company clerk and medic. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Mike returned to Cookeville and enrolled in Tennessee Tech. While at Tech, Mike earned three degrees including a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, a Masters of Arts in Administration and Supervision, and Specialist in Education in Instructional Leadership. Upon graduating from Tech, Mike worked at General Electric Supply, Corps of Engineers, Pitney Bowes, and was employed by the Putnam County Board of Education where he retired after thirty five years. During that time Mike was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, interim Director of Putnam County Schools, Deputy Director of Putnam County Schools and Director of Career and Technical Education. Mike attended Life Church. Mike loved to read and share books with friends. He had been a hunter and fisherman since childhood. His favorite was fishing for trout on the Caney Fork River and the Smoky Mountains. Along with hunting and fishing, Mike spent every chance he could in the outdoors enjoying nature, hiking, and canoeing, especially with his granddaughters. Mike is survived by his daughter Aston Blair (Robert) Miles; granddaughters, Carson and Lila Miles; brothers, Buddy Goolsby and David Goolsby; sister, Pam Goolsby Britton; niece, Tammy Goolsby; nephew, Mike Goolsby; and several special family members and wonderful friends. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his son, Jason Michael Goolsby and nephew Greg Goolsby. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, March 24 at Hooper and Huddleston Funeral Home. Bro. Tim Singleton will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00pm with a service following at 4:00pm.
