Matthias Thomas Case "Matt" passed away peacefully at his home in Cookeville on a cold but sunny Christmas morning, with his wife of 36 years by his side. Matt was born in Mt. Vernon, NY on July 1, 1928, the only child of Matthias Case and Edith Henry Case. He graduated from high school in Camden, NJ and entered the U.S. Army. Matt served in the 7th Medical Battalion in Korea for two years during WWII. Upon discharge, he attended Rider University in Trenton, NJ and graduated in 1951. Matt earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He joined U.S. Steel Corporation in Morrisville, PA and for the next 27 years he worked for several large steel plants throughout the northeast before joining Textron in 1978. Matt served as VP/General Manager of Dunn Steel Products in Plymouth, MI and later in Spencer, TN where he retired in 1995 at the age of 67. The move to Spencer was truly one of Matt's proudest accomplishments as the automotive plant grew from 100,000 sq. feet to over 250,000 and from only a few employees to more than 350. Matt always felt the "work ethic" of the Dunn Steel workers was exceptional and he was proud to have been involved with that workforce for more than 15 years. During his 40 years in Cookeville, Matt served as President of the Cookeville Country Club for two terms, Co-Chaired the American Heart Golf Tournament for 3 years and was Chairman of the "Restaurant Referendum" that resulted in the many restaurants we all enjoy today. Matt was also President of the CRMC Lifeline Program for many years and Chairman for 12 years of TRICOR...a state of Tennessee organization that is in charge of all manufacturing and farming within the state's penal system. In 1986 on of Matt's proudest ventures was founding the Cookeville Limousine Service, serving residents from the Upper Cumberland area and providing transportation to and from the Nashville Airport. Upon his retirement from Textron he and Betty sold the business in 1995, though it continued to operate for many years. Matt enjoyed organizing numerous "Dog Fight" golf outings over the years and was proud to have two "hole-in-ones" at our local Golden Eagle Golf Course. He was an avid reader and traveled to all 50 states in his lifetime. Matt attended First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Matt is survived by his wife of 36 years, Betty; two sons, Robert (Teresa) Case and Steve Case; three granddaughters and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Edith Case, and one daughter, Judith Case from Santa Barbara, CA. No visitation or service is planned. Matt always enjoyed a good party with family and friends...sadly that is not possible at this time. Hopefully a gathering with food and fellowship can be planned in 2021 to honor this wonderful man's life. The Case family would like to extend a very special thank you to the entire staff of Kindred Hospice who showed so much kindness and compassion to Matt and Betty. A big hug to Garrett and Miriah who went above and beyond to make Matt's final days "comforting". Contributions in Matt's memory can be made to the TTU Athletic Association Capital Project Account for Golf Course Beautification, 1500 Country Club Road, Cookeville, TN 38501 or to our Friends of Cookeville/Putnam County Animal Shelter, 2650 Gainesboro Grade Road, Cookeville, TN 38501.
