Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth Raymond Hunter, 74 of Algood will be held at 11 am Thursday January 9 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Bro. Bruce Mullinix officiating. Interment will follow in the Holly Springs Cemetery in Overton County. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 – 8 pm and again Thursday from 9 am until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Hunter died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville surrounded by his family and friends. He was born June 25, 1939 in Overton County, TN to the late Eula Pearl Hunter. Mr. Hunter is survived by his former wife, Jewell Hunter of Algood; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Scottie Roberts of Cookeville; step-daughter, Jane Ann Tidwell of Cookeville; sons, Ricky Hunter of San Diego, CA and Bobby Hunter of Cookeville; brother and sister-in-law, James and Nell Hunter of Cookeville; special granddaughter, Heather Roberts; grandchildren, Matt Hunter, Miranda Gantt, Gina Bilbrey, Christy Brown; daughter-in-law, Marla Bilbrey; and five great-grandchildren, Aysiah, Parker, Trevor, Zayden, and Stella. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, and step-son, Gene Bilbrey. Mr. Hunter was a member of Holly Springs Church of Christ. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing with his family. He was the founder and owner of Algood Fire Extinguisher until his retirement in 2000. He formerly was a truck driver for Putnam Farm Supply, Potter Freight Lines, Genco Stamping and McGugin Oil Company. Mr. Hunter also had worked for Satellite Security and was a home builder for Bruce Goolsby Construction. Mr. Hunter served the City of Algood in several capacities. He served eight years as a Alderman and 4 years as Vice Mayor. He also served on the Algood Planning Commission. Mr. Hunter was proud of his 23 years of volunteer service with the Algood Fire Department, the last ten years he served as Fire Chief. Mr. Hunter was a simple man who had a knack for being able to converse with owners and managers as well as employees of businesses he served while operating his fire extinguisher business. That business trait he passed on to his children who continue to operate the family business today. He built his business on handshakes, not contracts, which is how he believed business should be done. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
