Funeral services for Mrs. Juanita "Nita" Coleman McSpadden, 88, of Cookeville, formerly of Athens, will be held at noon (EDT) on Friday, April 11, from the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home in Athens, Tenn. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. (EDT) until time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. McSpadden passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at her home at Heritage Pointe in Cookeville. She was a daughter of the late Ulysses Washington and Gussie Martin Coleman. Mrs. McSpadden was a native of McMinn County and a resident of Athens for most of her life. She and her late husband owned and operated McSpadden Furniture Company in Athens for many years, and she was a member of the East Athens Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lem L. McSpadden Jr. and Donna McSpadden of Cookeville; three grandchildren, Brian McSpadden and wife Rana, Kelly Amanda "Mandy" Gaylon and husband Dewayne and Jennifer Erin "Jenny" Jackson and husband David; five great-grandchildren; and six sisters, Lana Sue Corcoran of Slidell, La., Barbara Beerman and Faye Roundtree, both of New Orleans, La., Anna Mae Willis and Patsy Williams, both of Trinity, N.C., and Betty McMillan of Merritt Island, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Lem Lucious McSpadden Sr. (who passed away on May 20, 2011); a son and daughter-in-law, John Stephen McSpadden (who passed away on Jan. 11, 2006) and Debbie Prescott McSpadden (who passed away on July 12, 2012); a brother, Ulysses G. Coleman; and a sister, Verna Daugherty. Memorial contributions may be made to McSpadden-McNew Scholarship Endowment School of Nursing, c/o Tennessee Technological University, P.O. Box 195, Cookeville, TN 38505. Rev. Pete Mullins will officiate at the services.
