Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Hazel Spicer, of Northport, Maine and formerly of Cookeville will be held Saturday January 19, at 1 p.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with Dr. Randall Adkisson officiating. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Mrs. Spicer died peacefully Tuesday January 8, 2012 in the Tall Pines Nursing Home in Belfast. She was born September 14, 1918 in Baxter, Tennessee to the late Clarence Clinton and Pearl Hill Whitaker. She received her BS Degree in Education from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TTU) and a Masters Degree in Speech and hearing from the University of Tennessee. A well-known educator for the Putnam County School System, she retired as Supervisor for Special Education after 43 years of service. She was a Charter Member of the Cookeville Pilot Club; serving in all elected offices; and in 1976 was the first member of the Cookeville Club to be elected Tennessee District Governor for Pilot International. She was a former long-time member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and has been a member of Cookeville First Baptist Church since 1959. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lou Vada Ferguson. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Terry Hire of Northport, ME; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Nell Whitaker of Athens, TN and Kenneth and Marjorie Whitaker of Montgomery, AL; and several nieces and nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Dale Maxwell, Bob Hill, and Kenny Hill. Active Pallbearers will be Kevin Ferguson, Keith Ferguson, Casey Parsons, Jim Whitaker, Jim Sullivan, and Johnathan Sullivan.
