Graveside Memorial Services for Helen Livingston Crofoot, 92 of Algood will be Saturday, Dec. 28 at 1:30 P.M. at Algood City Cemetery. David Norris will officiate. Visitation at the cemetery following services. Mrs. Crofoot died Saturday, December 21, 2013 in Kindred Transitional Care & Rehab at Masters. She was born March 13, 1921 in Algood to the late Harva R. and Mattie Verble Livingston. She graduated from Algood High School in 1939 and then left for Nashville, TN where she entered the nursing program of Nashville General Hospital, graduating with her Registered Nurse degree, and began a long and successful nursing career. After the U.S. entered World War II, she and most of her former classmates volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She served in England amid the air raids and blackouts until the end of the war. She served exceptionally well, earning numerous awards and citations. After the war ended, Helen returned to the states and began her career as a civilian RN, but remained in the Army Reserve. She was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and again during the Berlin blockade. She completed 20 years of military service before retiring with the rank of Major. She served as a civilian nurse in several states including Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia. She headed the Geriatric section at Baptist Hospital prior to her retirement in 1986. She then returned to Algood to be near her aging mother. She later moved to Cedar Hills Retirement Center in 2004. In August 2013, she moved to Masters Health Care Center where she remained until her death. She was preceded in death by her former husband Warren Crofoot, sisters Elise Bass and June Davis, brothers Cato, James and Jesse. Survivors include sister Joanna Matthews, 3 brothers Leonard, Tommy and Robert Livingston.
