Funeral services for H. S. Barnes, 92, of Cookeville, will be held 2 pm Saturday, October 20, at the Cookeville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Max Mayo and Rev. Drew Shelley officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Mr. Barnes family will receive friends Saturday from 1 pm until service time at the church. Mr. Barnes died Thursday evening, October 17, 2012 at NHC of Sparta. He was born December 19, 1919 in Cookeville to the late Herschiel Sevier Barnes, Sr. and Susan Tinnon Barnes. A World War II Veteran, he served from 1941 until 1945 with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. Mr. Barnes was a life-long member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Mr. Barnes was a member of the first freshman class at the former Central High School and attended TTU. In the 1930s he earned his undergraduate degree in Music Education from George Peabody College in Nashville. Following his tour with the Army he graduated Vanderbilt Law School in 1948 and practice law in Cookeville for nearly 50 years. He was active in many civic and community organizations. He was a former Cookeville city attorney, member of Board of Directors of Citizens Bank; member and Past Chairman of CRMC Board of Trustees; and a fifty-year member of the Cookeville Evening Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Goolsby. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vivian Hicks Barnes (whom he married December 22, 1950 in Cookeville); two sons, Tom Barnes of Los Angeles, CA and Joel Barnes of Dallas, TX; and daughter, Amy Barnes of Oak Ridge, TN. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Bill Walters, Jimmy Tinnon and members of the Putnam Count Bar Association. Active Pallbearers will be The Veterans Honor Guard.
